Anyone may write and distribute a Joomla! extension. As a service to our global community, this freedom to create and share extensions is actively encouraged and supported by the Joomla! Core team.
Due to the openness and popularity of the Joomla! project, there is a wide variety of extensions offerring an vast array of additional features. The quality and breadth of Joomla! extensions is one of the main advantages of Joomla!.

However openess and freedom comes with a price. Freedom is not free. It requires individual responsibility, and can survive only where a majority of participants act responsibly.

Freedom is most often abused through ignorance and maliciousness.

We ar all ignorant about some aspects of Joomla! security. The Joomla! Forums and Help sites serve as a place for us to collaborate and learn from each other.

Joomla!'s success has led to unwanted attention from malicious types, such as the script kiddies who run simple, automated scripts in an effort to find and deface others' sites.

It is important to note that, script kiddies actually perform a valuable service. They help us identify vulnerable extension and poorly configured servers that would otherwise remain open to much more serious threats.
