Joomla! Extensions Directory

The Joomla! Extensions Directory is a listing of all the currently available, and recorded, Third Party Developer (not a part of the Core Joomla! installation) Extension projects. 

Extensions allow a far wider scope of customisation and usability to be incorporated into a Joomla! installation than it would be practicable to do in the Core itself. It gives people the choice to add what they want when they want it.

At the time of writing (Jan '07), the total number of projects listed on the Joomla! Extensions Directory was 1241. This total includes the following Extensions:

• 607 Components
• 679 Modules
• 350 Plugins (the new name for Mambots)
• 148 Languages
• 59 Extension Specific Plugins
• 49 Tools
  

There are clearly more Extensions than there are projects and this arises where a single project file will include elements from all three Extension types. For example:

The Mosets Tree project is actually a group of Extensions that comprises:

• 1 Component
• 1 Mambot (Plugin)
  
• Approximately 15 Modules.

NOTE: The Mosets Tree Extension is a Commercially available extension that is currently used by the Joomla! Extensions Directory to display all the various Extension projects.

The Third Party Development of Extensions is a forever evolving process and on average there are 4 new Extensions every day.

If an Extension that a web site project needs has not been written yet, check back regularly to see if it is added. Alternatively, develop the Extension and add it to the Directory for everyone else to benefit from!

In addition to the above Extensions, there are also other projects available which are not currently recorded on the Extensions Directory.

Templates are another area where Third Party Developers are extremely active and it would not be possible to list all the available Templates, or indeed effectively keep up to date with new releases.

A search of the Joomla! Forums or a Google search for 'Joomla! Templates' will open the door to a massive array of available items both free and Commercial.

Google, today, showed a total of 1,190,000 results on this search parameter alone!
