Blog - Content Category Archive

Description:

The Blog Content Category Archive Menu Item is a shortcut to a Blog style page showing a number of Archived Content Items' Intro Text. Unlike the Blog - Content Category Menu Item, only one Category may be selected. It is possible to change the way in which the Content Items appear on the display page simply by changing the number of columns the articles are divided between.

Toolbar:

New Menu Item Toolbar Edit Menu Item Toolbar

Back: Click Back to return to the previous screen to select a different type of Menu Item to create the new entry from.

Save: Click Save to save a New Menu Item or any changes made during the current editing session and return to the Menu Manager [ menuname ] screen.

Apply: Click Apply to save any changes made so far in the current editing session but remain in the current Menu Item screen to continue editing. Once the editing session is complete click Save as above. If a New Menu Item was being created the screen definition switches from New to Edit, and the New Menu Item will have been added to the particular Menu. The Toolbar changes to reflect the change of definition and it is no longer possible to select an alternative Menu Item type.

Cancel: Clicking Cancel at any point ends the creation of a New Menu Item and returns the display to the Menu Manager [ menuname ] screen. Any changes made since the session commenced will be lost.

Close: Clicking Close at any point ends the current editing session and returns the display to the Menu Manager [ menuname ] screen. Any changes made since the session commenced, or since the last time Apply was clicked, will be lost.

Details:

Name: Enter the name that is required to appear on the Menu to identify this Menu Item.

Category: Select the Archive Category from the list of defined Categories to which this Menu Item will create a shortcut. This field is not editable once the New Menu Item has been saved for the first time.

URL: The URL will be created automatically by Joomla! when the Apply or Save icons are first clicked. The URL represents the internal link to the display element of the Component itself.

Parent Item: Select the existing Parent Item to which this Menu Item is to be associated. By default this is Top. Top is the Menu itself. The Menu Item will be visible in the normal view of the Menu. If another Menu Item is selected then this Menu Item will become a sub-Menu Item and will not be visible until the Parent is clicked.

Ordering: Control where this Menu Item will appear in its Menu, in the Front-end. Select this position from the drop-down display of current Menu Items contained in the Menu.

note711_smallNOTE: By default the new Menu Item is placed at the Top of the Menu. Its position can be changed once the New Menu Item has been saved for the first time. The resulting drop down box displays all Menu Items in the Menu whether they are published or not.

Access Level: Define which of the three document Access Levels applies to this Menu Item. Select from Public, Registered, or Special.

Published: Select Yes (the default setting) to Publish this Menu Item in the Menu. This will display the Name of the Menu Item, as entered above, in the Menu.

Parameters:

Menu Image: Select a small image, from the drop down list of available images, to be placed to the left or right of the Menu Item Title in the Menu. Images must be located in joomla_root/images/stories/ directory.

Page Class Suffix: This field can contain a suffix that is to be applied to the CSS classes of this page. This allows individual page styling with relative ease. For example, if the suffix .bl (short for Blog) is entered here, all CSS code elements in this page will have .bl added to them. h2 becomes h2.bl. Separate entries in the CSS file of the template would then be applied as entered.

Back Button: Set whether there is a Back navigation button inserted at the base of the target page being displayed. Options are Use Global (the setting made for the whole site in the Global Configuration), Hide, or Show. The Global site settings are overridden by these individual page settings.

Page Title: Enter the text that will be displayed at the top of the target page display in the Front-end of the web site. If left blank the entry defaults to the Menu Item name instead.

Page Title: Select Show or Hide to set whether the Page Title text entered above will appear at the top of their respective target page displayed in the Front-end of the web site.

# Leading: Set the number of Content Items to be displayed on the target display page as Leading (full width) Items . The Leading Item text is taken from the Introduction (Intro) Text field of the Content Item. 0 (zero) will mean that no Content Items will be displayed as Leading Items. Think of these as the main stories for the target page display.

# Intro: Set the number of Content Items to be displayed on the target page display with their Introduction (Intro) text showing. These Content Items will fit into the layout set within the Column field below.

Columns: Set the number of Columns that the Intro text will be displayed within on the target page display. This creates the same effect as the columns in a newspaper or magazine.

# Links: Select the number of Content Items that will be shown in a list of Links at the foot of the target page display. These will simply be the Title of the Content Item displayed as clickable links to their corresponding Content Items. A mini contents list.

Order by: This field determines the Order in which the individual Content Items are displayed within the target display page.

  • Default: Displays the Content Items, by Category Name and then, in accordance with the Order set within the Archive Manager.
  • Oldest First: Displays the Content Items in descending date order - Oldest to Newest.
  • Most Recent First: Displays the Content Items in ascending order - Newest to Oldest.
  • Title Alphabetical: Orders the Content Items alphabetically in ascending (A-Z) order, based on their individual Title headings.
  • Title Reverse-Alphabetical: Orders the Content Items alphabetically in descending (Z-A) order, based on their individual Title headings.
  • Author Alphabetical: Orders the Content Items alphabetically in ascending (A-Z) order, based on the Author Name.
  • Author Reverse-Alphabetical: Orders the Content Items alphabetically in descending (Z-A) order, based on the Author Name.
  • Most Hits: Orders the Content Items based on their Popularity. The greater the number of Page Impressions (Hits) that are recorded for the Item the higher it will be displayed in the target page display. The Item with the greatest number will show as the first Item.
  • Least Hits: Orders the Content Items based on their Popularity. The lower the number of Page Impressions (Hits) that are recorded for the Item the higher it will be displayed in the target page display.

Pagination: Select Show, Hide, or Auto to set whether the Pagination support is displayed within the target page display. The Pagination feature displays links to additional pages to display all of the Archived Content Items within the Category, for example:

<< Start < Prev 1 2 Next > End >>

  • Show displays the feature whether it is required or not - it will just appear greyed out if not usable.
  • Hide does not show the feature at all.
  • Auto shows the feature when the total number of Content Items exceeds the total number of Leading, Intro, and Link Items that are set to be displayed on the target page display.

If Auto is selected, the total number of Content Items currently in the Archive Manager determines whether this feature appears or not. For example: If there are a total of ten Content Items but the total of allocated spaces is only five (one Leading Item, two Intro Items, two links) then the feature will display. If however there are only five Items published it will not.

Pagination Results: Select Hide or Show to set whether the Pagination Results are displayed at the bottom of the target page display. The Pagination Results advise which Content Items of the total available For example: Results 1 - 5 of 10 or Results 6 - 10 of 10.

Section Name: Select Show or Hide to set whether the name of the Section, to which the Content Item belongs, is displayed  within the Content Item.

Section Name Linkable: If Show the Section Name is chosen in the previous setting there is now the option to make the Section Name text a link to the actual Section page and therefore display all Categories and/or Content Items of that Section and not just those published to the target page display. Linked Titles: The Global Configuration ->Content Tab screen has a setting within it that sets a Global rule with regard to whether Content Item titles are linkable, or not. It may well be that the Global rule is No. However, there may be occasions when it would be useful and/or essential that a title is linked.
