Components Finder Manage Content Maps Joomla 2.5

This screen shows the content maps currently in the Smart Search index. Content maps allow you to cross-reference your indexed content (articles, etc) to related meta information such as the category in which it resides. Each content item that is indexed by Smart Search is added to one or more content maps that can be used as filters when searching the index.

Content maps are split into two parts:

  • Branches: These are super-containers for a particular type of information. For example, a branch could be "Section", "Category", "Event" or "Author".
  • Nodes: Nodes are the actual values for the meta information in a particular branch. The nodes are, for example, the names of the categories or authors.

These branches and nodes are what make up the advanced search panel available on the front-end. For each branch there can be a drop-down select list and the nodes are added as values to the respective list. More advanced site builders can override the default layouts and use multi-select lists or checkboxes instead.

It's important to note that branches and nodes from different content types are merged into the one list. A Joomla article in a category called "News" and a news feed or contact in a category named the same are mapped to the same node in the same branch. This is a little like tagging different types of content with the same label. The effect is that your site visitor does not have to know how your content is classified in order to set the correct filters to find it.

The content maps screen shows all the branches within the Smart Search index together with a number indicating the number of nodes within that branch. Clicking on a branch title allows you to see the nodes within that branch together with the number of content items that belong to that node. A content item can belong to multiple nodes within a branch as well as to multiple branches.

Screen.sections.15 Joomla 1.5

Articles in Joomla! are organized into Sections and Categories. Sections are the top-level of organization and Categories go under Sections. The Section Manager is the place where you can edit existing Sections and create new ones. For example, a web site might have the following organization:

  • People
    • Volunteers, Staff, Board Members
  • Projects
    • Major Projects, Small Projects
  • Events
    • Local Events, National Events

In this example, 'People', 'Projects', and 'Events' would be the Sections. The sub-topics under each Section (for example, 'Volunteers', 'Staff', and 'Board Members') would be the Categories for each Section. When an Article is added, it would be assigned a Section (for example 'People') and a Category (for example, 'Board Members').

You can have an many or as few Sections and Categories as you need. Joomla! has a built-in Section and Category called 'Uncategorized'. This allows you to create Articles without creating or assigning any Section or Category. You just assign the Article to the 'Uncategorized' Section.

Sections are used for two reasons. The first reason is for organizing Articles on your web pages. The Section Blog Layout and Section Layout allow you to display multiple Articles on a page for a given Section. So, in the example above, you could have a page for 'People' that shows Articles related to this Section. A second reason to use Sections is to help manage your Articles in the back-end Article Manager. If you have a large number of Articles, you can filter by Section so you only see the Articles from one Section.

Screen.sections.edit.15 Joomla 1.5

There is where you can add a new Section or edit an existing Section. Sections in Joomla! are used to organize Articles. Screen.installer.15 Joomla 1.5

Extensions are add-ons that expand the functionality of Joomla!. Extensions are used to add capabilities to Joomla! that do not exist in the standard package. Hundreds of Extensions are available for Joomla!, with more being developed all of the time.

Extensions are categorized into five types, as follows:

  • A Component is a mini-application that renders the main body of the page. Examples of Components are Contacts, the Front Page, and News Feeds.
  • A Module is a smaller Extension typically used for rendering a small element that displays across multiple pages. Examples of Modules include Menus and Related Items.
  • A Plugin is a section of code that runs when a pre-defined event happens within Joomla!. For example, editors are Plugins that run when an edit session is opened.
  • The Language Extension allows for the Front-end and Back-end of Joomla! to be presented in any language for which a language Extension exists. This way, Joomla! can be released in a new language with no changes to the core program.
  • A Template controls the way the content of a web site is displayed, including the location and layout of elements, colors, fonts, and so on. Templates allow the appearance of the web site to be separated from it's content.

This screen is organized into six sections as follows:

  • Install: Allows you to install all types of Extensions.
  • Components, Modules, Plugins, Languages, Templates: Allow you to enable, disable, and uninstall Extensions of each type.
Screen.languages.15 Joomla 1.5

In the Language Manager you can set the default Language for both the Front-end and Back-end of your Joomla! web site.

Screen.modules.15 Joomla 1.5

The Module Manager is where you add and edit Joomla! Modules. In Joomla!, Modules are used to display content and/or media around the main content.

Module Facts:

  1. All Joomla! websites require at least 1 Menu Module
  2. All Other Module Types are Optional. (Examples: News, Banner, Latest News, Polls)
  3. Every Menu is accompanied by a menu module. (Example mod_mainmenu)
  4. Multiple occurrences of similar module types.
  5. Some Modules are linked to components. For example, each Menu Module is related to one Menu component. To define a Menu in Joomla!, you need to create the Menu and Menu Items using the Menus screens and then create the Module for the Menu using this screen. Other Modules, such as Custom HTML and Breadcrumbs, do not depend on any other content. See Module Manager - New/Edit for information about the different Module Types.

The Joomla! installation is accompanied with 20 module types, additional 3rd party modules can be located at the JED.

Screen.modules.edit.15 Joomla 1.5

This is where you create new Modules or edit existing Modules. This screen has two links in the upper left: Site and Administrator. The Site link is selected by default. The Site link allows you to work with Modules that will be visible on your web site's Front-end. This is where you will place most of your Modules.

The Administrator link allows you to work with Modules that show on your web site's Back-end. In many cases, it is not necessary to modify the back-end Modules for Joomla!. All of the standard Joomla! administrator functions are available with no modifications here. You only need to make changes here if you want to change the standard administrator functions.

When you create a new Module, you will select the Module Type. This will determine what type of content this Module can display. If you edit an existing Module, the Module Type will already be determined. Note that you cannot change the Module Type of an existing Module.

For detailed information about each Module type for your web site, see the Modules Site screen. For detailed information about modifying the Modules for the back end of your site, see Modules Administrator.

All Modules have two sections that are the same: Details and Menu Assignment. The Parameters are different for each Module Type.

Screen.templates.15 Joomla 1.5

The Template Manager is where you assign a default Template to your Joomla! web site. You can also edit and preview Templates here.

In Joomla!, the visual layout of both the Front-end and Back-end of your site is controlled by the Template. Templates are extensions that contain layout and style information that tells Joomla! exactly how to draw each page of your site.

When you first install Joomla!, one Back-end Template and two Front-end templates are included. Other Templates can be installed from third-party developers as Extensions.

If you want to use the same Template for all of the pages on your site, you just assign one Template as the Default Template. You can also assign different Templates to different pages.

This is where you can preview a Template, edit a Template's HTML and CSS files, and set parameters for a Template.

Site Maintenance Help Screens‎

Help Screen Version Description
Site Maintenance Clear Cache Joomla 2.5

This tool will delete all Cache files from the cache folders - including current ones - from your web server. As admin functions are cached too, some cache folders might appear as if they were not cleaned because they get recreated before cache content is rescanned after this action.

Cache files are temporary files that are created to improve the performance of your site. If you have made significant changes to your web site, such as changing your Template or Language, your cache files may be out of date. To avoid any problems caused by out of date cache files, you can delete all of the cache files.

  • Because this process deletes all Cache files, the website may be a little slower immediately after running Clean Cache. Once this process is complete, users lose the benefit of using the cache files until they are re-created by Joomla! to be up to date with your current site.
  • In contrast, the Purge Expired Cache option will check each Cache file individually for being out of date, but the process is slower and requires more system resources. However, the website should perform close to the same speed for users visiting your site, since all up to date files are still available for your current Joomla! site.

Site Maintenance Global Check-in Joomla 2.5

Selecting this menu option allows Joomla! administrators to perform a global check-in of all currently pending or locked items. It then shows the results of the Global Check-in. This is useful, for example, if an Article is locked by a User who opened it for editing and never finished the editing session. In this case, other Users are not able to edit this Article. Performing a Global Check-in releases all such items.

Site Maintenance Purge Expired Cache Joomla 2.5

This tool will purge all expired cache files from the cache folders. Cache files are temporary files that are created to improve the performance of your site. Cache files that are still current according to what Joomla! finds are not purged.

  • Because this process has to check each cache file individually, it is slower and requires more system resources. Once the purge process is complete there should be no loss in speed for your users, because all up to date cache files are still available for your current Joomla! website.
  • In contrast, the Clean Cache option runs more quickly since it deletes all of the files stored in each cache folder. However, the website may be a little slower immediately after running Clean Cache, since all cache files -- including current ones -- are removed, so users lose the benefit of using the cache files until they are re-created by Joomla!to be up to date with your current site.
  • If you have a large number of cache files and your server setting for 'max_input_time' is set to less then 60 seconds, you may receive a PHP warning message saying that the process exceeded the maximum time allowed. In this case, no harm is done but all of the files may not have been purged. It is ok simply to re-run the process.
