Developing an MVC Component

This is a multiple-article series of tutorials on how to develop a Model-View-Controller Component for Joomla! VersionJoomla 3.x.

Begin with the Introduction, and navigate the articles in this series by using the navigation button at the bottom or the box to the right (the Articles in this series).

This tutorial is part of the Developing a MVC Component for Joomla! 3.x tutorial. You are encouraged to read the previous parts of the tutorial before reading this.

In this step we add a map to the frontend site part, which provides the basis for understanding how we can get Joomla to link to our JavaScript and CSS code.

A video accompanying this step is available at Step 18 Adding a Map.

Functionality

Currently on our front end we can display a Helloworld greeting on a site web page. We'll enhance this page so that it displays a map as well.

We'll add a latitude and longitude into each Helloworld record so that we can display an associated position on that map.

Approach

We will add a latitude and a longitude field to our helloworld records, to relate them to a position on a map. This will involve changes to our admin functionality to enable the new fields to be populated and viewed.

Currently our site Helloworld view displays the helloworld greeting, and we'll enhance this view to display the map as well, with the position of the helloworld record (as defined by the latitude and longitude fields) shown as a marker on the map, and the map centralised on this point. We'll not bother updating the front end form to include the lat/lng fields however.

The map will be a dynamic (aka slippy) map, rather than a static map (which can usually be generated using just a URL), so the presentation will involve using a javascript library, and some CSS for styling. We'll need to tell Joomla to include our javascript and CSS code, and we'll need to pass data from our php code to our javascript code.

Primarily we'll use the open source Openlayers library, which is built upon the OpenStreetMap data. As an alternative we'll also include code for using Google maps instead.

Updating the Database

Add two fields, latitude and longitude, to our database record.

admin/sql/install.mysql.utf8.sql

DROP TABLE IF EXISTS `#__helloworld`;

CREATE TABLE `#__helloworld` (
	`id`       INT(11)     NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
	`asset_id` INT(10)     NOT NULL DEFAULT '0',
	`created`  DATETIME    NOT NULL DEFAULT '0000-00-00 00:00:00',
	`created_by`  INT(10) UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT '0',
	`greeting` VARCHAR(25) NOT NULL,
	`published` tinyint(4) NOT NULL DEFAULT '1',
	`catid`	    int(11)    NOT NULL DEFAULT '0',
	`params`   VARCHAR(1024) NOT NULL DEFAULT '',
	`image`   VARCHAR(1024) NOT NULL DEFAULT '',
	`latitude` DECIMAL(9,7) NOT NULL DEFAULT 0.0,
	`longitude` DECIMAL(10,7) NOT NULL DEFAULT 0.0,
	PRIMARY KEY (`id`)
)
	ENGINE =MyISAM
	AUTO_INCREMENT =0
	DEFAULT CHARSET =utf8;

INSERT INTO `#__helloworld` (`greeting`) VALUES
('Hello World!'),
('Goodbye World!');

/admin/sql/updates/mysql/0.0.18.sql

ALTER TABLE `#__helloworld` ADD `latitude` DECIMAL(9,7) NOT NULL DEFAULT 0.0;
ALTER TABLE `#__helloworld` ADD `longitude` DECIMAL(10,7) NOT NULL DEFAULT 0.0;

Admin Helloworld Edit Form

We'll change the edit form so that the two new fields are included as well.

There's nothing else that we need to do to get the admin edit form to work, but you should convince yourself that you understand why the following aspects are already covered:

Admin Helloworlds List View

We need to update the model so that the latitude and longitude are included in the fields selected in the SQL query. We're not going to provide sorting by the latitude/longitude data, so there's no need to include these fields in the filter_fields array.

			  ->from($db->quoteName('#__helloworld', 'a'));

		$query->order($db->escape($orderCol) . ' ' . $db->escape($orderDirn));

		return $query;
	}
}

We also need to change the layout file to squeeze the new fields into the display. We'll display them together in a Position column, in the form [lat, lng].

Site Helloworld Display

We extend our site helloworld display functionality so that it includes a map. The map will require the Openlayers Javascript library and associated CSS file, as well as our own JS and CSS files. By convention the latter go into the /media folder, and we put into the view file the code to link all these into our Joomla web page.

We also need to pass some data from our PHP code into our JS code, so that the map can be positioned correctly. This data comprises:

To implement this we'll get our view to call a model function getMapParams() which will provide the data, then the view code will initiate the transfer of the data to the JS code using the Joomla JDocument method addScriptOptions().

Finally we need to update our helloworld display layout file to include containers for the map and for the pop-up which displays the greeting when we click on the map marker.

Map Javascript and CSS code

The following two files are new to this step in the tutorial. As these two files are going into new subfolders within /media, we need to add a standard index.html in each folder, and tell Joomla to include them by inserting them in the manifest XML file.

media/js/openstreetmap.js

jQuery(document).ready(function() {

    // get the data passed from Joomla PHP
    // params is a Javascript object with properties for the map display:
    // centre latitude, centre longitude and zoom, and the helloworld greeting
    const params = Joomla.getOptions('params');

    // We'll use OpenLayers to draw the map (http://openlayers.org/)

    // Openlayers uses an x,y coordinate system for positions
    // We need to convert our lat/long into an x,y pair which is relative
    // to the map projection we're using, viz Spherical Mercator WGS 84
    const x = parseFloat(params.longitude);
    const y = parseFloat(params.latitude);
    const mapCentre = ol.proj.fromLonLat([x, y]); // Spherical Mercator is assumed by default

    // To draw a map, Openlayers needs:
    // 1. a target HTML element into which the map is put
    // 2. a map layer, which can be eg a Vector layer with details of polygons for
    // country boundaries, lines for roads, etc, or a Tile layer, with individual
    // .png files for each map tile (256 by 256 pixel square).
    // 3. a view, specifying the 2D projection of the map (default Spherical Mercator),
    // map centre coordinates and zoom level
    var map = new ol.Map({
        target: 'map',
        layers: [
            new ol.layer.Tile({ // we'll get the tiles from the OSM server
                source: new ol.source.OSM()
            })
        ],
        view: new ol.View({ // default is Spherical Mercator projection
            center: mapCentre,
            zoom: params.zoom
        })
    });

    // Now we add a marker for our Helloworld position
    // To do that, we specify it as a Point Feature, and we add styling
    // to define how that Feature is presented on the map
    var helloworldPoint = new ol.Feature({geometry: new ol.geom.Point(mapCentre)});
    // we'll define the style as a red 5 point star with blue edging
    const redFill = new ol.style.Fill({
        color: 'red'
    });
    const blueStroke = new ol.style.Stroke({
        color: 'blue',
        width: 3
    });
    const star = new ol.style.RegularShape({
        fill: redFill,
        stroke: blueStroke,
        points: 5,
        radius1: 20,   // outer radius of star
        radius2: 10,   // inner radius of star
    })
    helloworldPoint.setStyle(new ol.style.Style({
        image: star
    }));
    // now we add the feature to the map via a Vector source and Vector layer
    const vectorSource = new ol.source.Vector({});
    vectorSource.addFeature(helloworldPoint);
    const vector = new ol.layer.Vector({
        source: vectorSource
    });
    map.addLayer(vector);

    // If a user clicks on the star, then we'll show the helloworld greeting
    // The greeting will go into another HTML element, with id="greeting-container"
    // and this will be shown as an Overlay on the map
    var overlay = new ol.Overlay({
        element: document.getElementById('greeting-container'),
    });
    map.addOverlay(overlay);

    // Finally we add the onclick listener to display the greeting when the star is clicked
    // The way this works is that the onclick listener is attached to the map,
    // and then it works out which Feature or Features have been hit
    map.on('click', function(e) {
        let markup = '';
        let position;
        map.forEachFeatureAtPixel(e.pixel, function(feature) {  // for each Feature hit
            markup = params.greeting;
            position = feature.getGeometry().getCoordinates();
        }, {hitTolerance: 5});  // tolerance of 5 pixels
        if (markup) {
            document.getElementById('greeting-container').innerHTML = markup;
            overlay.setPosition(position);
        } else {
            overlay.setPosition(); // this hides it, if we click elsewhere
        }
    });
});

Using Google Maps

As an alternative we can use Google maps to draw the map.

To do this, you first need to get an API key (which is free for personal use) from here. Once you have a key, insert it into the updated addMap() code within site/views/helloworld/view.html.php as shown below.

<?php
	function addMap()
	{
		$document = JFactory::getDocument();

		// everything's dependent upon JQuery
		JHtml::_('jquery.framework');

		$key = '... insert your API key here ...';
		$document->addScript("https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?key={$key}&libraries=drawing&v=3&callback=initMap",
			array(), array('async' => 'async', 'defer' => 'defer'));

		// ... and our own JS and CSS
		$document->addScript(JURI::root() . "media/com_helloworld/js/googlemap.js");
		$document->addStyleSheet(JURI::root() . "media/com_helloworld/css/openstreetmap.css");

		// get the data to pass to our JS code
		$params = $this->get("mapParams");
		$document->addScriptOptions('params', $params);
	}

and insert the following code into media/js/googlemap.js

function initMap() {

    const params = Joomla.getOptions('params');
    const mapCentre = { lat: Number(params.latitude), lng: Number(params.longitude) };

    // Define the types of maps which can be shown, eg road, satellite
    var mapTypeIds = [];
    for (var type in google.maps.MapTypeId) {
        mapTypeIds.push(google.maps.MapTypeId[type]);
    }

    // Now draw the map
    var map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById('map'), {
        center: mapCentre,
        zoom: Number(params.zoom),
        mapTypeId: google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP,
        mapTypeControlOptions: { mapTypeIds: mapTypeIds }, streetViewControl: false, scrollwheel: true, gestureHandling: 'cooperative'
    });

    // Add a marker at the position in the helloworld record
    var marker = new google.maps.Marker({
        position: mapCentre,
        map: map,
        title: 'Click here to see the helloworld greeting',
    });

    // Finally add an info window which displays the greeting when the map marker is clicked
    var infoWindow = new google.maps.InfoWindow({});
    marker.addListener('click', function() {
        infoWindow.setContent(params.greeting);
        infoWindow.open(map, marker);
    });
}

You can also remove the div element relating to the pop-up container in the last line of the layout file site/views/helloworld/tmpl/default.php, as Google Maps uses a different mechanism to display the pop-up when you click on a map marker.
